Career Success for Overseas Born Professionals

Australia welcomes over 100,000 skilled migrants every year. In New South Wales they join 1.5 million other foreign born residents.

Many overseas born professionals who have learned English as their second language find it difficult to achieve success in their chosen careers in Australia, despite having good qualifications and work experience.

Currently, more than 24% of skilled migrants are unemployed and a much higher proportion are not working in their chosen occupation, even in professions suffering from skills shortages such as Accounting, Engineering, IT and Healthcare.

Many other skilled migrants who are employed do not to achieve their desired career and salary growth within their organisations.

Are you one of these people?

Why aren’t skills and qualifications enough?

In Australia, fluency in English and the ability to fit with the culture of an organisation are critical success factors in business. Relevant skills and qualifications are not enough.

To achieve career success, overseas-born professionals must acquire:

  • Business English communication skills at a professional level
  • The ability to adapt to Australian workplace culture
  • Effective techniques for securing job opportunities and active career management
